A previous incident involving an RTX 5090 system highlighted the shortcomings of the older cable design. A verified report described how a power connector overheated and melted, prompting Moddiy to advise that cables built before 2025 should not be used with the new Nvidia GPUs based on the Blackwell architecture. These older cables, identified with an "H+" marking, were constructed using the previous 12VHPWR specifications. In contrast, the new cables, labeled as "H++," feature enhancements that improve power distribution and reduce the risk of overheating, ensuring they can handle the higher electrical loads demanded by modern GPUs.
The latest power cables have been redesigned to meet the 12V-2x6 standard, addressing the increased power requirements of Nvidia’s RTX 50-series GPUs. Unlike older cables based on the original 12VHPWR standard, the new models produced from 2025 onward come with thicker wiring and improved materials for both connectors and terminal housings. With a power rating of 675 watts and compatibility with standards like ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1, these cables provide a stable and efficient power interface for GPUs such as the RTX 5090 and RTX 5090D. The design also features three 8-pin connectors that combine into a single 12V-2x6 output, making them suitable for legacy power supplies that lack dedicated connectors for the new standard.
Independent testing by technical experts has shown that legacy cables can reach temperatures up to 150°C due to uneven power distribution. While some system integrators have not consistently reproduced these overheating conditions, the risk remains significant for gurus working with RTX 50-series GPUs. Considering that the RTX 5090 has a base MSRP of approximately $1,999 in the US market, it is important for gurus to verify that all system components, especially power delivery systems, meet the latest technical standards. This update to the cable design represents a technical adjustment aimed at maintaining both system safety and performance under high-demand conditions.
